Downey wildlife control Tip of the Month:

Should I Try to Catch a Bat?
There are many people out there who don't like injuring animals in any way. They don't set traps out for mice. They don't put products around their home that make it difficult for birds to perch. They are true humanitarians and have love for all animals. However, that does not mean that they want them inside their house. This is especially true if it is an animal like a bat. Bats are extremely dangerous animals. Not only can they injure you through their bite or with their claws, but they also put your family at risk because of the diseases they carry. Even coming in contact with their urine or feces poses a problem to you.

What to Do about a Bat in My Home
Knowing the risks of having a bat inside your home is not likely making you feel any better right now. You have to can be concerned about your children, your pets, and your spouse. This is especially true considering the fact that a bat is a wild animal. It is trapped in a cage or in some part of your home, and is trying to figure out what to do. You simply don't know what a wild animal will do. They are quite unpredictable. Your first inclination is to probably try to set up some kind of trap to capture the animal. Maybe you will throw a blanket over it, or try to lead it toward some kind of cage you have in place. These are real good ideas, but aren't something you should try and your own, if at all possible. If you are able to get someone to help you, try to lead the bat into a large pillowcase or knock it down so that you can throw a blanket over the top of it. The latter is the better option. It's very difficult to try to capture the one of these animals, and the last thing you want to try to do is to contain it while it is flailing around in the bag. The much better option is to knock it down with a broom or mop. Once it is dazed, throw a blanket over the top of it.

A Word of Caution
Before attempting to capture the animal, it is important that you protect yourself. This means covering all of your exposed skin, wearing gloves and boots, and a surgical mask and goggles if you have them. This will prevent the animal from scratching or clawing you, and will keep parasites and diseases off of you. After you have captured the animal, simply set it outside. Don't try to help it get loose. It may come at you. The best thing to do is to just lay the blanket down and let the animal figure out how to get away. Also, after you are done, make sure you clean yourself thoroughly. Take a shower and wash all of your close right away. Want to play it safe. It is the safest thing for you to do.
